Story setup

Super Mario Sunshine gets its summer slot on Switch 2 August 13, joining the GameCube Nintendo Classics library for Expansion Pack members. Nintendo says the service is exclusive to Switch 2, which makes this less like a broad rerelease and more like a membership catalogue addition. There is nothing wrong with that arrangement, but the pace remains the story around it. 9to5Toys says the GameCube library launched with The Wind Waker, Soulcalibur II and F-Zero GX, and that additions have arrived slowly. Sunshine is a welcome pick because it is distinct from the usual Mario comfort food: Isle Delfino, FLUDD and cleaning polluted ground are a very specific version of Nintendo’s platforming past. Still, a good addition does not answer how quickly the rest of the library will arrive. Nintendo’s archival footage still knows exactly which memory to press.

After the trailer

Mario crosses Isle Delfino and uses FLUDD to clean polluted ground, which remains a strange, cheerful image for a Mario game. Nintendo confirms Sunshine arrives August 13 for Switch 2 Expansion Pack members. The slow addition rate noted by 9to5Toys means this is best read as a catalogue win, not evidence that the GameCube library has suddenly accelerated. The service has another worthwhile game. The broader release rhythm remains deliberate. Zoe, bring us to Star Wars, where the appeal is less nostalgia than a tactical frame for the licence.
